Exciting Aviation History Unveiled at Wings of the North AirExpo 2023

The nonprofit Wings of the North (WOTN) is all set to soar high with its 25th annual AirExpo this upcoming weekend at Eden Prairie’s Flying Cloud Airport. The event is a treat for aviation enthusiasts, featuring an impressive display of 30 to 40 vintage aircraft and over 20 aviation veterans.

Event Details and Highlights

Gates will open at 8 a.m. on both days of the weekend. The AirExpo will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 23. For adults, tickets are available at $30 when purchased at the gate, but a discounted rate of $25 can be availed by purchasing tickets online in advance. Children aged 6 to 17 can enter with a ticket priced at $5, while admission is free for children aged 5 and under.

Apart from the mesmerizing aircraft displays and appearances by distinguished guests, AirExpo 2023 will also offer a delightful pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on both days. The hangar will host numerous exhibits, and attendees will have the thrilling opportunity to enjoy plane rides.

A Fascinating Blend of Entertainment and History

Bob Jasperson, the spokesperson for WOTN, emphasized that the AirExpo serves a dual purpose: offering an enjoyable family outing and a practical history lesson.

“Aviation has always fascinated people, and it has led to advancements that have benefited everyone,” Jasperson said. “Wings of the North aims to present all aspects of aviation history, with a special focus on the aircraft and veterans from the World War II era.”

Behind the Scenes: Planning for the Air Show

Jasperson, a dedicated WOTN volunteer and current president of its board of directors, revealed that planning the air show is a year-round endeavor.

Recently, he discussed the air show, the organization’s fourth annual airplane sweepstakes, and the search for a new museum location at the airport.

While optimistic about the upcoming show, Jasperson acknowledged the weather-dependent nature of such events. Last year, a thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon caused a significant disruption, costing them approximately $20,000.

Showcased Aircraft and Notable Performances

Among the highlights of the AirExpo will be the showcased vintage aircraft, including the C-130 Hercules cargo plane from the 133rd Airlift Wing stationed at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. This aircraft is believed to be the largest ever to land at Flying Cloud Airport, making it a major attraction for visitors.

Additionally, the event will feature two A-10 Thunderbolt II planes from the 303rd Fighter Squadron, scheduled to perform a flyover on Saturday morning, synchronizing with the National Anthem.

Celebrating History: World War II-era Airplanes and Veterans

The AirExpo will also pay homage to the historical significance of aviation with its display of many World War II-era airplanes, such as the North American T-6 Texan trainer, P-51D Mustang “Sierra Sue II,” F4U-4 Corsair, and the N2S-1 Stearman training biplane, once piloted by President George H. W. Bush.

The event will be graced by two distinguished World War II veterans: Robert Holmstrom, a B-24 tail gunner, and Jim Rasmussen, a B-17 navigator.

WOTN Sweepstakes: A Chance to Win a Classic 1948 Beechcraft Bonanza

During the AirExpo, visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in WOTN's annual airplane sweepstakes. The grand prize is a beautifully refurbished 1948 Beechcraft Bonanza called “BB8.” For those not in need of an airplane, the alternate prize is $35,000 in cash. The drawing will take place at WOTN’s fall pancake breakfast on Sept. 9.

Last year's winner chose the cash prize, leaving the aircraft behind. This year, the sweepstakes offer a new option, allowing people to purchase three entries for $120, providing them with a slight discount. The sweepstakes have been remarkably successful, attracting participants from 47 states and two Canadian provinces.

A Home for Aviation History: Seeking a New Museum Location

Apart from its spectacular AirExpo, WOTN prides itself on an extensive collection of aviation-centric items, including wartime art, a vast library of two thousand books, and uniforms. The organization considers itself a Minnesota aviation museum, focused on highlighting the rich aviation history of the state.

Presently, most of the collection is in storage, following the loss of their lease in August 2021. WOTN aims to find a new home at Flying Cloud Airport, accommodating the museum's impressive exhibits and artifacts.

Jasperson and his wife, Judy, play integral roles in the museum's operation. He serves as the volunteer director, while Judy acts as the volunteer curator, making sure visitors experience the rich aviation history showcased by WOTN.

The WOTN board of directors is actively seeking a new location for their museum, aiming to raise enough funds to own their own building. They envision a future where their collection will be accessible to the public, contributing to a deeper understanding and appreciation of aviation history in Minnesota.
