Google Developing Android Feature to Automatically Enable Airplane Mode During Flights

Google is said to be in the process of developing a new feature for Android that will enable users to automatically activate Airplane mode when boarding a flight. The technology is expected to enhance the functionalities of Airplane mode. Google has filed a patent for this connected flight mode with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Currently, users have to manually activate Airplane mode when flying, which typically disables all connections on their devices.

According to a report by ParkiFly in collaboration with David Kowalski (@xleaks7) on Twitter, Google's patent filing describes a connected flight mode that will automatically switch a mobile device to flight mode during boarding. It will utilize various sensors, such as pressure drop, acceleration/velocity, cabin sounds, ultrasonic signals, GPS signals, Cellular IDs, and Wi-Fi signals, to disable automatic backups, background app refresh, and updates.

Additionally, Google will also consider factors like travel booking activity and check-in status to enable this feature automatically. The connected flight mode will allow selective network connectivity options, including in-flight Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

This technology will eliminate the need for passengers to manually activate flight mode when boarding an aircraft. Moreover, the feature will switch devices back to normal mode by reactivating cellular connections and restoring standard settings upon landing. Unlike the existing flight mode, which disables all wireless connections, including cellular networks, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, this new feature will provide more flexibility by allowing users to turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth even when Airplane mode is active.

In addition to this development, Google is also reportedly working on an 'Undo' button for its Android keyboard, GBoard. This feature, currently being tested in the latest GBoard beta version, will allow users to recover deleted text by providing an Undo option.

These upcoming features demonstrate Google's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and introduce convenient functionalities to its Android ecosystem.
